Heating a Garage Conversion

Garage conversions become home gyms, offices, playrooms, snugs and extra bedrooms. The heating is often an afterthought, and the room ends up with a plug-in heater that never quite keeps up.

Why garage conversions are hard to heat

• The floor. Garages sit on a concrete slab, and even with insulation laid over it, the floor tends to be the coldest in the house.
• Distance from the boiler. Garages are usually on the edge of the house, so extending radiator pipework means long runs, often through finished rooms.
• Exposed walls. A converted garage often has three outside walls and a roof above it, particularly an integral garage with a flat roof.

Why a heat pump suits them

A Haier heat pump needs only a short pipe run to an outdoor unit just outside the garage wall, so there's no pipework through the rest of the house. It heats quickly, holds the temperature with its own thermostat, and runs independently of the main heating. You can keep a home gym cool while you train, or an office warm through the day, without touching the rest of the house.

A garage conversion used as a gym is a particularly good fit: warm for the warm-up in January, and cool when you're working hard in July.

Sizing

A typical single garage conversion is around 2.5m × 5m. With decent insulation that usually suits a 2.5kW or 3.5kW unit, depending on the glazing, the roof, and whether it's an integral or detached garage. We confirm it at survey.

Doing it during the conversion

If the conversion is still in progress, it's worth planning the heat pump in with your builder. The pipe entry and power supply can then be built in before the walls are finished.

Running costs
