Bungalow Heating with Air to Air Heat Pumps

Of all the homes we heat with Haier multi-split systems, bungalows are consistently the most straightforward, and often the ones where it makes the biggest difference. There are plenty of them in the villages around Buckingham, Winslow, Towcester and Brackley, and a lot of them are heated by oil, LPG or ageing electric storage heaters.

Why bungalows suit air to air heat pumps

• The loft does the hard work. On a single-storey home, pipework from the outdoor unit can run through the loft and drop into each room from above. There's no trunking up the outside of a two-storey wall, and the result is very neat.
• One outdoor unit, several rooms. A multi-split runs two to five indoor units from a single outdoor unit. That's enough for the living room, kitchen and bedrooms of a typical bungalow.
• Rooms heat up fast. Warm air arrives within minutes rather than waiting for radiators to warm through, which people notice most on cold mornings.
• Every room has its own control. Keep the living room at 21°C and the bedrooms cooler, or turn the spare room off, from the remote or a phone app.

Bungalows off mains gas

Many of the bungalows we see are on oil or LPG, or have storage heaters. For those homes a heat pump often takes over most of the space heating, with the old system kept as a backup or for hot water. Our pages on replacing oil and LPG heating and replacing storage heaters go into the numbers.

Hot water

An air to air heat pump heats rooms, not water. If you have a boiler, it carries on doing the hot water and runs far less. If you have an immersion cylinder, that stays. We'll go through what suits your bungalow at survey.

Summer cooling, too

Bungalows with a lot of south or west-facing glass, or with low-pitched roofs, can get uncomfortably warm in a heatwave. Because every unit is reversible, the same system cools the house in summer.

A typical bungalow set-up

A common layout for a two or three-bedroom bungalow is a larger unit in the living room (often 3.5kW or 5.0kW), a unit in the kitchen-diner if it's separate, and a 2.5kW unit in each of the main bedrooms, all on one multi-split outdoor unit. Common questions

Are air to air heat pumps good for bungalows?

Yes. Bungalows are among the easiest homes to heat this way, because pipework can run through the loft into each room and one multi-split outdoor unit can serve up to five rooms.

How many rooms in my bungalow can one system heat?

One Haier multi-split outdoor unit runs between two and five indoor units. That typically covers the living room, kitchen and main bedrooms of a two or three-bedroom bungalow.

Will I still need my boiler?

For hot water, yes, unless you have or install another hot water system such as an immersion cylinder. The heat pump takes over most of the room heating, so the boiler runs far less.

Is the pipework visible?

In most bungalows it runs through the loft and drops into each room from above, so very little is visible inside or out.

Can it replace oil or storage heaters in a bungalow?
