Government VAT relief on air conditioning, right now

Since 2022, HMRC has applied a temporary 0% VAT rate to the supply and installation of qualifying energy-saving materials in residential properties — and HMRC's own guidance confirms that most air conditioning units count as air source heat pumps, since they're reversible and heat as well as cool. That means many of our installations qualify for 0% VAT rather than the standard 20%. On a typical £2,000 install, that's around £400 you don't pay.

To qualify, the system generally needs to be permanently fixed, installed in residential accommodation, and supplied together with installation as a single job. The relief is confirmed to run until 31 March 2027, after which it's due to revert to a reduced rate.

This is general information, not tax advice — eligibility depends on your specific property and installation, and we'll confirm the correct VAT treatment on your written quote and invoice.

What we do

Split system installation, done right

Every job includes copper pipe and condensate drain pipe run as standard. Trunking, outdoor power, a condensate pump and mounting type are all priced separately so you know exactly what you're paying for.

01

Supply and install

Haier wall-mounted split systems sized correctly for your room, not oversold.

02

Pipework and trunking

Copper and condensate pipe included in every install. Trunking to hide the run is priced per metre.

03

Electrical and drainage

Outdoor power sockets and condensate pumps fitted where the room or pipe run needs them, carried out by installers qualified to F-Gas and Part P standards.

Our brand of choice

One brand, chosen deliberately

We install Haier exclusively. Keeping to one manufacturer means our team knows the range inside out, we hold the right spares and stock consistently, and it keeps installation costs down — savings we pass on rather than spreading across a wider, more complicated brand list.

Haier

One of the world's largest air conditioning manufacturers. Wi-Fi app control and 56°C sterilisation included as standard, backed by a 6-year warranty.

Year-round comfort

These aren't just air conditioners — they heat too, fast

Every system we install is a reversible heat pump running on R32 refrigerant. In winter it pulls heat out of the outside air — even when it's close to freezing — and moves it indoors. No slow warm-up, no waiting around: rooms come up to temperature in minutes, not hours.

The science, in plain terms

Heat pumps use a refrigeration cycle to absorb low-grade heat from outside air and move it indoors. The refrigerant — R32 in the systems we install — moves through an evaporator, compressor, condenser and expansion device at carefully controlled pressures and temperatures, allowing the system to draw usable heat from the air even when it's close to freezing outside.

It's the same underlying physics as a fridge, just running in reverse: moving heat from one place to another, rather than generating it from scratch. That's why it stays efficient even on a genuinely cold day.

1

Warms up fast

No slow-building radiators to wait on — heat pump air conditioning brings a room up to temperature in minutes.

2

Works down to sub-zero

These units keep extracting usable heat from outside air even when it's close to freezing, not just on mild days.

3

Cheaper than you'd think

Because they move heat rather than generate it, running costs are often lower than a plug-in electric heater for the same room.

Running costs

What it actually costs to run, per hour

Modern heat pump air conditioning moves heat rather than generating it, so it uses far less electricity than the kW figure alone suggests. Costs below use manufacturer efficiency ratings (SEER for cooling, SCOP for heating) against the current Ofgem price cap rate of 26.11p per kWh (July–September 2026).

Room size Haier cooling Haier heating
2.5 kW · bedroom, small room11.7p/hr18.1p/hr
3.5 kW · typical double bedroom, home office16.3p/hr25.4p/hr
5.0 kW · living room, open plan23.3p/hr36.3p/hr
7.1 kW · large or multi-room space33.1p/hr51.5p/hr

Figures are indicative, based on Haier's SEER/SCOP seasonal efficiency ratings at each unit's rated output and the national average Ofgem price cap unit rate. Actual costs vary with room insulation, outdoor temperature, thermostat setting and electricity tariff. Get a size-specific figure in your online quote.
